Storage Favorites: Wean Greens
Food spoilage can really be a problem when your stomach isn’t very big. It seems that we throw away a lot more food than we used to. One solution is cooking smaller portions. But not all recipes halve or quarter well. So we turn to storage solutions! My freezer is always brimming with Wean Greens, each filled with a tiny, well-preserved, home-made masterpiece. And you’ll find plenty in my fridge as well.
What’s a Wean Green? It’s a glass container with a tight-sealing snap top, just the right size for those of us who eat very small portions. They’re made for baby food storage. And they’re not the only ones out there. Search your favorite web retailer (being a Seattleite, I am fond of amazon.com) for “baby food glass containers” and enjoy the results. Or visit a local baby/children’s store and see what they have in stock.
When I prepare a full-sized batch of a favorite dish, I eat some right away and put the rest in these small, serving-sized containers. Some go in the fridge and some go in the freezer. Then whenever I wish, I have my own wonderful food in the perfect portion size waiting for me just a zap away.
Maybe you prefer plastic. I like glass. It’s easier to clean, doesn’t stain or melt, and doesn’t leak hormones into my food. (Yes, the lids are plastic but they don’t touch the food for days or weeks like the glass does.)
If you don’t want to spend money buying containers, find a friend or neighbor who buys baby food and ask for their empties!
